Pizza on the Grill

Author: adminDate: 09-12-2011

Game day, gathering the gang after a bike ride, snacking during family game night — there are lots of times when a pizza would be great outdoors.

Make your pizza on the grill, and nobody has to miss any of the fun!

It’s easier than you’d think. Choose a ready-made crust from your grocer’s refrigerator section. Some come in tubes and some are pre-baked. You can also make your own pizza dough in the morning, and then just pull it out when you’re ready to put together your pizza.

Add sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings. In Rome, there’s a pizzeria on every corner, and they just lay slices of mozzarella on the pizza base with fresh tomatoes and basil. Go American style with a jar of pizza sauce, grated cheese, and pepperoni. Or get creative! Veggies, meat, and your favorite sauce can be combined in lots of ways: garlic Alfredo sauce with cooked chicken and artichoke hearts, pesto with mushrooms and cooked sausage — you’re limited only by your imagination.

Use a Primo glazed pizza baking stone for best results. It’s non-stick, it comes in two sizes to fit your grill, and you will get that crisp-soft texture that everyone loves. Clean up is easy, too.

Plan a Patio Bonfire

Author: adminDate: 07-12-2011

bonfireA bonfire on the patio makes a great way to relax and visit with friends during the holidays.

A fire pit or outdoor fireplace creates a safe bonfire party. If you don’t have an outdoor fireplace or a fire pit (well, of course first think about ordering one at Massi Decor — free shipping makes this a perfect gift!) you’re best off on the beach rather than in the back yard. Nothing wrecks the mood at a bonfire party faster than the arrival of fire trucks.

Make sure you have enough fuel. Whether your firepit or outdoor fireplace uses wood, gas, or gel, check the fuel supplies so no one has to make a run for more fuel in the middle of the party.

Seating is the next consideration. You can have standing room only, but people will stay longer and relax better if there’s some comfortable seating. If you’re inviting a crowd, you may not have enough patio furniture to accommodate everyone. Folding chairs make a great solution, especially if you entertain often, or ask guests to bring their own. If everyone’s young and strong, lay down rugs and blankets and let them lounge on the ground.

Food and drink make the party go. Beer can be a great choice for bonfires, but keep safety in mind when there’s fire involved. Offer some substantial food such as sandwiches or chili to keep people clear headed. Roasting hot dogs and marshmallows makes the food part of the fun. Set up a table with supplies for convenience. Make a centerpiece by massing glowsticks in a glass bowl or vase to help people see the goodies without spoiling the ambience.

Where entertainment is concerned, bonfires are usually a time to enjoy conversation with friends. Bring out a guitar or two and sing, or add an outdoor TV for music, movies, or the game.

Time to Cover Patio Furniture?

Author: adminDate: 05-12-2011

patio furniture coversIf you live in a wintry climate, you know it’s time for patio furniture covers. Quality outdoor furniture can be left out in the elements without seriously damaging it, but you don’t really want to clean it after it’s had falling leaves covered with snow sitting on it for months.

Here in Alabama, it’s more of a personal choice. Here are some points to bear in mind as you consider whether to put covers on the furniture for the winter or not:

  • How often do you use your patio furniture in the winter? If the kids come home from college and hang out by the pool from Christmas to New Year, if you like to watch the Super Bowl on your Outdoor Cinema System, if you treasure crisp evenings by the fire pit — well, then you’ll be taking the covers off and having to put them back on too frequently for it to be worthwhile. If you don’t spend much time outdoors when the evenings draw in, then go ahead. You’ll like the way the furniture stays pristine for your use in the spring.
  • What material is your patio furniture made of? If you have teak patio furniture, or other types of natural wood, your furniture may change colors over the winter if it’s left uncovered. Rub in some teak oil to protect it, and cover it when you’re expecting rain or stormy weather. If you like the soft weathered gray the wood turns over time, leave it open to the elements. High quality resin and outdoor wicker furniture can stay outside all winter. Cast aluminum will be better off covered in extreme weather. Lower quality patio furniture, however, can turn brittle in the sun, fade, and even break if left uncovered all year. At Massi Decor, we sell only top quality patio furniture, but if you bought your patio furniture elsewhere, take an honest look and decide whether it’s up to an outdoor winter.
  • What’s the environment like? If you’ll have lots of birds, falling flower petals and leaves, or damp mornings and nights, your patio furniture needs protection. The furniture itself may not be damaged, but the finish may not look as good, and you may have to make more effort to clean the furniture in spring. If you spend less time outdoors in  winter and you know your patio furniture will face these influecnces, save yourself a lot of trouble by cleaning it thoroughly and putting on covers.

Massi Decor patio furniture covers are available in all the sizes you need, and they’re made of a special material that protects from cold, heat, and UV rays. The covers have elastic bands to ensure proper fit, and they’re lightweight and easy to install. In an attractive sandstone beige, they won’t detract from the look of your patio. Extend the life of your patio furniture and protect your investment with fine furniture covers.

Patio Furniture: Age Matters

Author: adminDate: 02-12-2011

Does age matter when it comes to patio furniture? You bet it does!

Not the age of the furniture, necessarily. This beautiful Chadwick dining set will look great for years. Let it get a weathered look, or apply teak oil each season to keep the original color. Either way, it’ll look great.

No, it’s the ages of the people who will use the patio furniture that make the big difference.

If you have toddlers, go with rounded corners to avoid having kids bump their heads on the edges of the furniture.

If you have teens, you’ll need lots of seating, the loungier the better. The average teen will lounge whether the furniture is designed for it or not, so you might as well save them the trouble of draping their arms and legs over the sides of straight chairs.

Older adults will appreciate higher seats in chairs so they can more easily get up out of the chairs. A cushy, comfy, low slung chair seems like a great idea till they have to struggle out of it.

If you like to get the whole family together, choose several types of chairs in similar styles for maximum comfort for everyone.

There are so many styles of patio furniture available now that it’s easy to find any look you prefer — even when you’re being practical about the people who will use it.

Arranging Your Outdoor Room

Author: adminDate: 30-11-2011

Unless your patio is small enough that you really have no choice about where to put the furniture, it’s important to give some serious thought to the layout of your patio furniture.

One great time to think about this is before you buy patio furniture, or before you buy new pieces for upcoming parties.

Do yourself a favor and measure your space. Once you get into a showroom, it’s hard to keep a clear idea of how much space you have. When you shop online to get great deals, it can be even more difficult. You’re having to visualize the size of the furniture while also visualizing the size of your patio, and most of us aren’t that accurate.

Instead, get our your measuring tape and measure your space.

Use an online tool like the Room Layout Tool or draw the space out on paper. Use the same scale to measure out the sizes of the patio furniture you’re considering. You can do this very roughly. For example, our International Steel Patio umbrella stand takes up 28 square inches of floor space, so you can cut out a 3″ inch square to represent it. Do the same for each of the pieces you own and each of the new pieces you’re thinking of buying.

Now comes the fun part! Play around with the new pieces to see how they’ll fit together. Some tips to help find the best arrangement:

  • Every room, indoors or out, needs a focal point. Yours might be an outdoor fireplace or a piece of sculpture.
  • Group furniture according to the activities that will be taking place. You probably will want a conversation grouping, where people can sit comfortably and talk to one another. You might also want a grouping that includes a grill and a dining set. You’ll need to make sure that there’s room for the chef to move around the grill and that the chairs can be maneuvered without running into trees.
  • Vary sizes of the furnishings for interest, but make sure that they are compatible and comfortable.

Have an imaginary walk through your plan in a common situation: an afternoon with the family watching the game and grilling up some burgers and brats, or an evening with friends enjoying a cup of coffee around the fire pit after a movie.

Taking this step before purchasing lets you buy your patio furniture with confidence. Massi Decor patio furniture has all the size information you’ll need.

Which Primo Grill is Right for Me?

Author: adminDate: 28-11-2011

Primo Grill XLYou’ve decided that it’s time to step up to a Primo Grill, or maybe this is the year you give one to that special someone as a gift. Now the hard part: which one do you choose?

All the Primo Grills give amazing results, all give a satisfying cooking experience, and all have the wow! factor. So how do you choose among them?

At left you can see the Primo Oval XL Grill and Smoker. It has 400 square inches of cooking surface, 680 inches with optional upper racks. The Primo Junior looks the same, but has 370 square inches of cooking space.

Below right is the Primo Kamado Grill, which has 280 square inches of cooking surface, in a round rather than an oval shape.

As you can see, there are two main variables: size and shape.

Let’s talk about size first. That’s a simple decision, really. Buy the largest grill you can afford. None of these grills will really fit in your backpack anyway, and once you get started with the Primo, you’ll want to have cookouts and smoke turkeys and generally show off what your grill can do.

Since Primo Grills are very efficient, you won’t feel like you have too much grill, or that you’re having to use a lot of fuel to cook a small amount of food. With a larger grill, you can cook more at one time. Not only will that come in handy for parties, but it also lets you grill chicken for tomorrow’s salad alongside tonight’s steaks — a serious time saver.

So check the budget and buy the largest that you comfortably can (check out our sale, too, and see how much your budget will cover right now!).

That brings us to shape. The oval shape lets you cook meat on one side and veggies on the other. You can even add a firebox divider and smoke on one side while you grill on the other. The round shape takes a little less patio space.

Here’s where you have to think about your lifestyle. Do you grill on a tiny city balcony where space is at a premium? Do you like to cook the whole meal on your grill, or do you have a kitchen maven doing the sides while you stick to the meat? Is it important to you to have a variety of meats at one meal?

Fortunately, this is one choice where either way you go, you’ll be happy with your outcome. Any Primo Grill will be the most exciting gift of the season, and any Primo Grill that you buy for yourself will make you happy.

The Myth of Black Friday

Author: adminDate: 25-11-2011

Black FridayThere are a lot of stories out there about Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Some of them are true, but not all.

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year. Nope. The Saturday before Christmas is consistently the biggest shopping day of the year. Black Friday is just the craziest shopping day of the year.

It’s called Black Friday because this is the day retail stores get into the black for the year. While it’s true that some stores make most of their sales for the year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, that isn’t true for all stores. Nor is it true that most stores run at a loss (“in the red”) until Thanksgiving. In 1966, the Philadelphia police coined the term to describe the difficult day they expected with traffic and parking. Later, as the expression spread, the “black ink”  story grew up to explain the expression. Now, “Black Friday” is just a red letter day for avid shoppers.

Cyber Monday is for online shopping; Black Friday is for shopping with your feet. Not necessarily. Plenty of online stores have everyday deals better than what you’ll find locally on Black Friday, not to mention the convenience of shopping in your jammies and having your stuff delivered (Massi Decor even offers you free shipping). What’s more, you may find items in stock at your favorite online retailer even on Black Friday when stores run out — sometimes because they’ve only had one or two of an advertised loss leader. And of course many online merchants now hold Black Friday sales, too.

Black Friday deals are the best. Sometimes they are, especially on big ticket items, but often they’re not. Typically, there’ll be one or two items at deep discounts in a store, and the rest are special buys (sometimes of lesser quality), items brought in the previous week and marked up high so they can appear to be deeply discounted, or just ordinary prices with bigger signs. What’s more, many retailers discount further later in the season. This myth makes some shoppers think they’re getting great deals, and others convince themselves that they are to make themselves feel better for having gotten up so early.

If you like to go out shopping on the day after Thanksgiving for the sense of danger or the thrill of the crowds, go for it. Check prices online before you go, though, and make sure you’re comparing the same price and model. Stores will still be open in December.

Home Decor Trends for 2011/2012

Author: adminDate: 23-11-2011

Massi Decor chaise longueTop designers are already talking about the home decor trends for next spring, but we’re still getting ready to decorate for the holidays. If you’re planning to buy home fashions this holiday season, you might as well look at some options that will look great now and still be in style come spring.

That’s especially true for patio furniture. This is the perfect time to take advantage of sales on outdoor furniture, and it makes a terrific holiday gift, but you’ll be using it more when the weather warms up.

So here’s a heads up on the trends that will be showing up in stores and decorating magazines next season.

Color goes bright for 2012. Red orange, like the covers on this Oxford Garden Chaise Set, is one of the most popular colors for the coming season. See it paired with deep blue, or in citrus combinations reminiscent of a bowl of tangerines, lemons, and limes.

Bright colors in general are an important trend, as in the Polywood Long Island Chairs shown at right.Tangerine, shocking pink, aqua, and saturated blues are all trendy colors for 2012.

At the same time, we’re seeing a lot of neutral backgrounds. White painted fences and poured concrete or natural stone tiles make gardens and bright tropical colored patio furniture pop. Polywood Long Island chairs

Shapes At the same time that we’re seeing the bright colors, shapes are simple or retro — sometimes both. Simple lines and organic shapes are popular, but so are the homey effects of wicker and wrought iron. Mix them up for a fresh look.

In fact, mixing it up is a trend of its own. Mixing and matching styles is a strong trend in decoration.

Texture With bright colors and simple shapes in play, how can you avoid a child like look? Well, if you want to have a youthful effect, this is the year for it. Playful effects punched up with geometric patterns are in vogue.

Some of us like a sophisticate effect, though, and that’s coming through in texture. Home decor and fashion designs alike are showing up in chunky knits and slubbed fabrics with the look of raw silk, while interior designers are loving the look of wood, stone, and metal in complicated combinations.

outdoor fireplaceOne example is this outdoor fireplace from Blue Rhino. The rough textured finish, the lattice work, the lava rocks and logs, and the ceramic bowl produce a mix of textures that looks elegant yet natural.

The three examples on this page can work together for the sassy, eclectic look designers are showing for the new season, or any one of them can update the patio furniture you already have.

Browse Massi Decor for new looks and old favorites. Free shipping, great selection, and affordable prices always make Massi your best source for patio furniture.

How to Clean Your Grill

Author: adminDate: 18-11-2011

Primo grillIf you have a new grill (and our Primo Kamado is on sale, so this is a great time for one), take the time to oil the metal parts before you use it. It’ll be much easier to clean afterwards.

And you should clean it afterwards, every time you use it. Use hot soapy water and a grill brush and give it a good scrubbing, just the way you wash pans in the kitchen. Once a year, take it apart and wash anything you missed during the year.

Too late for that advice? Don’t despair. Take any removable parts off the grill. Sweep out any ash and brush off as much of the baked-on gunk as possible with a stiff wire brush.

Put washable parts to soak in hot soapy water. You might need to use the bathtub for this. Scrub the parts clean once the gunk has softened up.

Now, rub the metal parts with olive oil and reserve not to let your grill get into that state again.

If your attempt to clean that old grill of yours has made you feel that it might be time to get a new one, can we just remind you that we have a wonderful selection of Primo grills? Go over and browse through them, and we bet you’ll see something you’ll love.
